This $13 Chilean cabernet proves good wine values still exist

Let’s travel the world this week from Chile to Austria and Bulgaria for a trio of delicious affordable wines. Chile shines with bargain cabernet sauvignon, while Austria chimes in with a minerally white and Bulgaria with a classy rosé.

GREAT VALUE

Root: 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Maipo Valley, Chile, $13

This popular Chilean brand is now sporting a new label design to emphasize the winery’s sustainability efforts. Root: 1 claims to be Chile’s first certified sustainable winery and the first to implement carbon offsets. That’s all good on the outside, and the wine inside the bottle delivers a reminder that Chile produces some darn good cabernet sauvignon at affordable prices. Look for blackberry jam with a hint of mint and sage. Certified sustainable. Alcohol by volume: 13 percent. BW: 510 grams (Average).

I had strayed from grüner for several months, but this terrific wine welcomed me back with a bouquet of jasmine, honeysuckle and peach blossom, braced by citrus minerality. Certified organic. This producer has makes a fine zweigelt at the same price. ABV: 12.5 percent. BW: 410 grams (Light).

Ilaya Rosé 2021

Thracian Valley, Bulgaria, $20

What a classy rosé, as well as a reminder that pink wine more than a year past the vintage is not necessarily past its prime. Made from mavrud, a native Bulgarian variety, this palest of pink wine sings with strawberry and melon notes, accented by mint and thyme. Lovely, and a great choice for Thanksgiving’s cornucopia of flavors. ABV: 12.5 percent. BW: 580 grams (Average).

Imported and distributed locally by Bohemish Wines.
